Movement Therapy
I offer individual movement therapy (pilates, somatics, therapeutic yoga etc) for people interested in using this to help them form a better relationship with their body.
Some of the things that people seek this help for are:
Support in recovery from an eating disorder or disordered eating
Being supported to connect with their body again after trauma, pain, illness
Coming back to sport or exercise after an eating disorder or RED-S
Managing anxiety, overwhelm
Learning to trust their body again
Insomnia
Movement is more than physical. Used therapeutically and with awareness it can support us in ways that 'talking therapy' may not. It can help address unconscious behaviour or response patterns that are keeping us stuck and offer alternatives which are then embodied in movement. It can offer a different approach to feelings about the body and self and how we relate to others.
By working WITH the body we can gradually loosen the hold of chronic patterns and coping strategies that were once useful but no longer serve us. Movement can help us to manage emotions, integrate healthier coping strategies, understand our body signals and help clear overwhelm and compulsive thoughts.
We approached these practices mindfully and with appropriate insight into past triggers & challenges faced so far in recovery. Learning to move in tune with your body, as opposed to against its needs, can be a significantly important step towards full complete recovery.
I am able to work with a full range of issues, including trauma and diagnosed eating disorders (bulimia, binge eating, anorexia and other restrictive or purge disorders).
Sessions are each 60 minutes and will start with a check in and perhaps some discussion about how you are doing (what’s going well and what you might be finding particularly challenging at this time)
From here we will tailor your session to your needs, goals and how you are feeling that day.
We may include poses, movement, breath work, mindful techniques. We may talk or be more quiet during the session. This will all depend on what is most needed to support you and your recovery.
We will finish with a check in again.
We may formalise some kind of practice that you can have between sessions. Sometimes what we do in session together transfers off the mat quite naturally and doesn’t need formalised as such. (The body has an amazing ability to learn and remember itself)
HOW SESSIONS WORK
I offer an initial session as a stand alone, and then we work for an agreed period of time together. This is so that we can allow to body time and space to find new ways of moving without pressure of timescales.
